Civil Litigation

Civil litigation refers to lawsuits filed by individuals or businesses. It is the process of resolving disputes between two or more parties through the court system. The individual or business who initiated the lawsuit is known as the Plaintiff. The individual or business who is being sued is known as the Defendant. Civil litigation typically involves money disputes, contract disputes, property disputes, torts, civil wrongs, negligence, defamation, fraud, etc.

The general course of civil litigation proceeds as follows: (1) The filing of a Complaint, (2) Service of Process, (3) Pleadings/Preliminary Motions, (4) Discovery (including written discovery and depositions), (5) Dispositive Motions, (6) Settlement Conference, (7) Trial, and (8) Judgment and Appeals.

Construction/Home Improvement Litigation

Construction litigation is the legal process used to resolve disputes that arise during or after a construction project at your home or property. These disputes often involve property owners, contractors, subcontractors, design professionals, suppliers and lenders. These types of disputes can stem from issues such as breach of contract, defective work, delays, payment issues, and changes in the scope of work.

Most commonly, from the property owner’s perspective, a contractor failed to perform pursuant to the terms of the contract or did not perform its work in a workmanlike manner. In these instances, the property owner is left with an incomplete project or a project that needs to be repaired properly by another contractor. Whereas, on the other hand, a contractor may be dealing with a property owner who refuses to pay their final invoice or has attempted to change or modify the scope of work while the work is in the process of being performed, which causes compound issues.

Liability in these cases often depends on the relationship and control between the parties, but the most important document is the construction contract itself.

Protective Orders & Peace Orders

In everyday life people often mistake the phrase "restraining order" for what Maryland law and courts recognize as peace orders and protective orders. In simple and general terms, these types of court orders prohibit an individual from being in the presence of and contacting or attempting to contact another individual for a period of time.

Personal Injury

Personal injury law, also known as tort law, governs legal disputes where one person’s actions cause harm to another, whether physical and/or emotional. The most common personal injury cases include motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall accidents, medical malpractice, product liability, and workplace injuries. These types of cases usually require that the person or business who caused the injury owed a duty of care to the injured party. A duty of care can be defined as a legal obligation to act reasonably toward the injured party. Traffic Citations

JPB Law is here to help you with your traffic citations, including, but not limited to, driving without a license, driving with a suspended license, speeding tickets, etc. As of October 1, 2025, the stakes have risen when it comes to severe traffic citations in the State of Maryland. If you are pulled over driving 30 miles per hour or more over the speed limit, that citation is now classified as reckless driving, which can result in up to 60 days in jail and a $1,000.00 fine.

DUI/DWI’s

If you have been charged with an alcohol-related driving offense, you should contact an attorney immediately.
